As many of you know, Ryker is OBSESSED with Star Wars! We recently moved to a new home and I promised him that I would create an amazing Star Wars themed room for him. How many of you parents cringe when your kid asks for a “themed” room? I know I did! So, I decided to create a room that he LOVES and doesn’t make me feel nauseous to see everyday. The most important thing to remember when creating a character themed room is that you will probably have to change the character in a year or so. Kids tend to go through “favorite” phases rather quickly. With that in mind, I’ve created and easily changeable room that will grow with him.
Here’s how I did it:
Step 1: Neutral wall color// This color is Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray. I have this color in 3 other rooms of my home as well. It is literally the perfect light gray!
Step 2: Wall Decals// Wall decals are AMAZING! It looks like you spent tons of money and time creating the perfect walls for your room. In reality, it is super easy and reasonably priced! The best part is that you can remove the decals without damaging the paint when you are ready for a change. I decided to make a design that felt like the bed was a ship launching into hyperspace. I did this free hand and am pretty please with the outcome.
I am obsessed with Walls by Mur! They have the most modern shapes and colors. I chose the black confetti to make my design.
Here’s how to do it:
Start by drawing a circle on the wall in pencil. (I used a vase as a guide.) Then place one row of decals around it.
Next place decals between the others in alternating rows.
Continue doing this and start spreading the decals out as you get farther away from the center of the circle.
Step 3: Simple furniture// The key to creating a room that is easily changeable from one theme to another is simple furniture. You want to be able to simply swap out decor without having to buy new furniture every time. This means NO car beds, ship beds, disney themed dressers, etc! There are other ways to create that same feel without committing to buying the actual furniture.
Here is what I chose:
Tristen Metal Bed // Ikea Mandal Dresser // Ikea Trofast Toy Storage
Step 4: Character bedding// I chose the simple Darth Vader quilt from Pottery Barn for two reasons. First, it is adorable. Second, it is reversible. So, when Ryker is done with Star Wars, it can be flipped over to the plain gray side. Two for one!!! I added super comfy jersey sheets and a fleece blanket that I want to live under.
Pottery Barn Star Wars Quilt & Euro Sham // Jersey Sheets // Amazing Blanket
Step 5: Decor// Now for the fun part! I used a mixture of wall art, toys and a rug to decorate this room.
Pottery Barn Solar System LED // Ikea Sillerup Rug // 31 inch Darth Vader // 31 inch Storm Trooper // Cuddle & Kind Everest Penguin // Filsta Table Lamp // Super Moon // Darth Vader Mask // Storm Trooper Lego Holder
Ok…now who wants to see what I did to Grey’s Room?
